Proef Rotterdam

proefrotterdamLast saturday the BF and I had a wonderful breakfast at Proef Rotterdam. For €10,95 pp we had a breakfast board. Which consisted of slices of sour dough bread with cheese, cumin cheese and cured beef with scones, thickly whipped cream, strawberry jam and apricot jam. Along with a cup of coffee and a glass of tea.

The scones are probably the best I ever had. Very light with a slightly crunchy outside. The sour dough bread was heavenly. Absolutely a breakfast to get up early for.

Recently switched to a new telecom provider. With it, I got the new Android G1. I have to wait untill the 25th before my mobile internet sets in. In the meantime I’m testing it trough my wi-fi. Major downside is that it’s set on connecting to the internet, even when roaming. And connection to pc/mac isn’t what I would call userfriendly.

Happy Sushi and a Day of Shopping

We had to do some errands for our business. One of our partners is officially leaving, no drama involved. Him and I made a nice day of it. First some shopping, LOTS of clothing for him and WotLK for me :D.

Then the all important SUSHI! It was delicious. Top favourites are Tuna Love (tuna and rice shaped into a heart) and the Maguro Sandwich (rice, nori, tuna sandwich with crab topping). I wanted to take some pictures, but the food was so enticing that it was gone before I thought of taking a picture.

I’ll definitely try to make the maguro sandwich myself. Rice, nori, chopped tuna with sesame seeds, nori, rice, topped with chopped crabstick with Japanese mayonaise, sesame seeds and green tobiko. *love*

Indonesian Potato Croquettes

I just made these yummy Indonesian Croquettes.

For the potatoes:

  • 600gr of potatoes
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Grated nutmeg
  • 1 egg

Peel and boil the potatoes, mash them and add salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste. Leave too cool and add 1 egg and kneed into a dough.

  • 250 gr of mixed pork/beef mince
  • Bit of ketcap manis
  • Grated nutmeg (about half a nutmeg)
  • Little bit of sugar
  • 1 clove of garlic

Brown the mince, add the rest of the ingrediënts and let it cool. Take a handful of potato mixture and press the middle so you can stuff it with the filling. I also made round shapes which were a bit easier and snacksize. Then coat the croquette in toasted breadcrumbs. I didn’t double coat, but you could roll them in whisked egg and coat them again. Deep fry for a couple of minutes.

I made the croquettes yesterday, kept them in the fridge and fried them today.. yummy!!! Next time I’m going to try to add an onion to the filling.

Delia’s Scones My Way

When making scones I always use this recipe as a guide. Because I don’t have buttermilk available I substituted the 2 tablespoons of buttermilk with 2 tablespoons of mild yoghurt for this recipe.

In my version I shape the scones by hand instead of rolling the dough and cutting it with a ring. I don’t have enough surface area or the patience to do it this way. This cheats shortcut tastes just as yummy to me. In our gas oven I baked these at gasmark 6 1/2 (220C) for about 20 minutes on the highest shelf.

It’s very hard to keep my hands off them. Some have to last till tomorrow for Steve’s lunch.

For a savory version I add less sugar and add some thyme, a bit of grated mature cheese and chopped sundried tomatoes. It’s been too long since I’ve made scones.

Bad review Wehkamp

I’m a bit of a World of Warcraft fiend. A while ago I started playing again after a few months hiatus. With the new expansion I pre-ordered Wrath of the Lich King at Wehkamp.nl. 22 euro’s a piece instead of 30 to 34 euro’s. Should have known that there was a catch. A few days after ordering I checked the time of arrival, 4 WEEKS instead of just 1 week.

BF called Wehkamp to cancel the order. They told us it would arrive within the week regardless of what the website said. Now one week later I receive an e-mail saying that _unfortunately_ delivery is in 3 weeks time. Couldn’t they tell me this when we tried to cancel our order in the first place??

Will try to cancel again. Hope we can still get it at Mediamarkt.

My Onion Bhaji

I tried this recipe before. I thought it was a bit bland, but I did make my own twist to it. Like I don’t use coriander/cilantro because it’s the herb from hell. Also winged it a bit on the spices, because I don’t have em all.

Then yesterday I saw another recipe on Indian Food Made Easy. So now I tried my own version with some plain flour added and yoghurt. At the time when I made this, the recipe wasn’t yet published. I’ll try the one on the BBC site next time.
Mountain of Onion Bhaji
My version has:

  • 200 gr gram flour
  • 100 gr plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • about a cup of yoghurt
  • 1 spring onion
  • paprika powder
  • curry powder
  • pinch of salt
  • couple of turns of pepper
  • some water

Mix the dry ingrediënts without the onion, add yoghurt and water, till you get a batter that is not too thin (wetter than bread dough, dryer than pancake batter). Add onions. For frying I used a small saucepan with about 5cm of oil. Heat till about 170/180C and fry spoonfuls of batter for about 3 minutes.

I like to eat it with some chili sauce.

Cutesy Critters

My sweet boyfriend had these made for my birthday by his fab collegue. Ubercute crochet critters by Danidou. Which I could make these myself. I’m bubbling with ideas. First one would be an octopus!

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Food, I love it. Haven’t really made anything interesting lately, but I wanted to give this catagory a start. Inspired by some online surfing I got the munchies for a grilled cheese sandwich.

I used white bread, pesto, some sliced tomato and mozzarella. Don’t have a toaster so I baked these in a pan which is even more fatty and yummy. Made two which was a bit much, but nice nevertheless.
